Comparison of the later operation and maintenance costs between air-cooled units and water-cooled units, and reference for engineering selection

  • Release time: 2026-06-24

Many purchasers only compare the initial purchase prices of the equipment when selecting, ignoring the operation, water supply, and spare parts replacement costs during the years of use. The long-term overall investment gap is significant. This article comprehensively compares the long-term operation and maintenance costs of air-cooled and water-cooled condensing units from four dimensions: energy consumption, supporting facilities, daily maintenance, and spare parts wear and tear, providing data reference for the selection of cold storage and industrial cooling projects.
1. Comparison of energy consumption costs by scenario
For small and medium-sized intermittent operation cold storages, areas with water shortage, and projects with good ventilation conditions, air-cooled units do not require pumps and water towers to continuously consume electricity, and the daily basic energy consumption is lower; for large 24-hour full-load aquatic freezing, chemical cooling, and over 10,000 square meter logistics cold storages, water-cooled units have a higher heat dissipation efficiency under high load, and under the same cooling capacity, the compressor power consumption is lower, and the long-term annual electricity cost is more economical.
In hot and water-deficient overseas areas, water-cooled units need to be additionally equipped with water purification and water circulation equipment, and the comprehensive energy consumption and supporting investment increase significantly. Air-cooled models have a stronger adaptability.
2. Differences in maintenance investment for supporting facilities
Air-cooled units do not have a water circulation system, and there is no need to clean water tower scale, replace circulating water, or repair pump pipelines. Only regular cleaning of condenser fins is required. The maintenance labor input is low; water-cooled units require a cooling tower, circulating pump, water tank, and water treatment agents. Every quarter, water scale needs to be cleaned, and filter consumables need to be replaced, resulting in additional water treatment and pump maintenance expenses throughout the year.
Small overseas cold storage projects lack professional maintenance personnel, and the advantages of air-cooled units for simple maintenance will significantly reduce the operational pressure of customers.
3. Comparison of spare parts wear and replacement cycle
The core wear parts of air-cooled units are cooling fans. In high sand and high corrosion environments, the bearing wear of the fans is accelerated; the wear parts of water-cooled units include pumps, water tower fillers, water path sealing rubber rings. The water path is prone to water scale accumulation and blockage over a long period of use, and the aging of sealing parts leads to more frequent replacement. Under the same usage conditions, water-cooled units have more types and quantities of spare parts replacement each year than air-cooled models.
4. Initial supporting investment for site construction
Air-cooled units only need to reserve a ventilation room and do not require the construction of a water pool or the laying of water circulation pipelines. The initial construction cost is lower; water-cooled units require a dedicated area for water tower placement and the laying of circulating water pipelines. The cost of large-scale projects is higher due to the need for construction support.
5. Selection suggestions for different budgets and operating conditions
For limited budgets, areas with water shortage, small and medium-sized fresh-keeping cold storages, and small overseas projects, air-cooled units are preferred; for large processing and storage projects with sufficient water supply, 24-hour continuous production, and poor ventilation conditions, water-cooled units are selected to balance the long-term electricity cost.
Shaoxing Xueying Refrigeration produces a full series of air-cooled and water-cooled condensing units simultaneously. The technical team can, based on the customer's site conditions, operating duration, and local water resources situation, provide a complete operation and maintenance cost calculation plan and recommend suitable models, taking into account both the initial purchase investment and long-term operational losses. Summary
The main advantages of air-cooled units lie in their simple installation, low operation and maintenance costs, and small site requirements; the water-cooled units excel in energy savings and power reduction during high-power full-load operation. When selecting, it is not enough to simply compare the unit prices; instead, the total cost of operation over many years should be calculated based on the site conditions, average daily operating hours, and water resource conditions, so as to select the refrigeration equipment with a more balanced cost performance.
